I started my passion for oil painting 25 years ago by attempting to recreate the iconic aesthetic of the impressionist painters. For me, it has always been about the light.
Since then, I’ve developed my craft and worked to find my own visual voice – while still holding on to a bit of that light that makes the work of impressionist painters so special.
I use writing, sketching, mark making, photography, and videography to help myself connect to the emotional light I absorb from places, events, nature, and people.

I’m Marie, a multidisciplinary artist who loves flowers, animals, nature, its elements, and the good nature of people. When it comes to genres, I say "Why limit yourself?" I focus on whatever touches my heart, stirs my spirit, and inspires me to create. My extensive background as a professional horticulturist has deeply influenced my color choices and several collections of my work. That being said, I am not limited to botanical themed work. I’m Marie Stephens, an artist whose roots stretch from the rolling fields of Iowa to the sunlit shores of Malta. My creative journey began in a home filled with sawdust and fabric scraps—my father, a carpenter with Dutch heritage, built our first two homes by hand, while my Maltese mother, a teacher and gifted seamstress, filled our world with color and craft. Their story—meeting at a USO dance in the Mediterranean—reminds me daily that art and adventure are in my blood. Pictured left: One of the first oil paintings I made in the year 2000...Maltese boats floating in a filed of Iowa corn, an attempt to honor my heritage, before I really knew how to paint!
Growing up in the 1980s(that's me in the pink shirt with purple tube socks), I spent countless hours exploring the outdoors, drawing at the kitchen table, and soaking in nature documentaries. Though I always excelled in art, my path took a detour through horticulture, where I spent years as a grower and florist before returning to painting as a creative outlet. Inspired by everything from Bob Ross marathons with my sons to the ever-changing Midwest landscape, my work now ranges from detailed realism to expressive abstraction.
I believe in following curiosity wherever it leads—why limit yourself? Whether I’m painting florals, landscapes, or portraits, I strive to evoke the same sense of wonder and possibility that shaped my own journey.

Nature has always been my greatest muse. Whether I’m traveling abroad or walking through the wild prairies of Iowa, tending to a garden, or simply watching the way sunlight dances across a field, I find endless inspiration in the natural world’s colors, textures, and quiet resilience wherever I go.
My background in horticulture and floristry taught me to see the extraordinary in the everyday—how a single bloom can hold a universe of color, or how the changing seasons mirror the cycles of creativity.
But it’s not just the landscape that moves me—it’s the people I encounter along the way. I’m continually inspired by the kindness, humor, and generosity of spirit I see in others, whether it’s my family, friends, or the broader creative community.
The “good nature” of people—those small acts of encouragement, the willingness to perform, to share stories, the courage to create—fuels my own desire to make art that uplifts and connects.
Through my work, I hope to capture both the beauty of the world around us and the warmth of human connection. My paintings are a celebration of life’s simple wonders and a tribute to the people who make the journey meaningful.
